Cytotoxic effect of ripe hog plum (Spondias pinnata) peel extracts on the viability of oral carcinoma cancer cell lines (KB cells) and Normal cells (Vero cells)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Hog plum (Spondias pinnata) is a medicinal plant which has been reported to have varieties pharmacological properties. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate the cytotoxic effect of the ripe hog plum peel extract with oral carcinoma cell lines (KB cells) and compared to normal cells (Vero cells) by MTT assay. The results showed that the extract displayed the cytotoxic effect on KB cells in dose and time dependent. The IC50 values at the incubation times for 24, 48 and 72 h were 1.0, 0.8 and 0.6 mg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, the extract was examined the cytotoxic on normal cells. The results indicated that the IC50 dose which appeared in normal cells had a higher concentration than 1.6 mg/mL for all incubation times and significant with the IC50 of oral carcinoma cells lines. This result demonstrated that the bioactive compounds in the ripe hog plum peel extract exhibited the low cytotoxic effect on Vero cells. Therefore, this extract could be used for research and development in the future.
