Abstract

          Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is an important thermoplastic that has low cost and is safe to use. PVC can be synthesized by free radical polymerization via suspension and emulsion processes. PVC resin can be modified by using various additives such as, plasticizers, fillers, and impact modifiers to achieve different required properties. It can be blended with other polymers. It can be replaced  wood and metal due to its durability and lightweight. Various molding techniques for instance, single screw extrusion or twin screw extrusion, calendering, and thermoforming can be utilized with PVC, thus producing varieties of products such as blood bags, doors, airplane and car parts, shoes, bags, and tubes. PVC synthesis, PVC additives, PVC blends, PVC moldings, structure, and chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of PVC will be discussed in this article. Also, the applications of PVC will be mentioned.
