Development of Creative Lacing Media to Enhance Fine Motor Abilities in Young Children
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to: (1) develop and evaluate the quality of creative thread-lacing media for young children, and (2) compare young children’s fine motor abilities before and after using the creative thread-lacing media. The study employed a pre-experimental research design using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 20 kindergarten level 2 children selected through purposive sampling.
The research instruments included: (1) creative thread-lacing media, (2) 24 learning experience plans, (3) a media quality evaluation form for experts, and (4) a nine-item fine motor ability assessment covering three dimensions: hand dexterity, hand muscle strength, and hand–eye coordination. The intervention was conducted over eight weeks, three sessions per week, with each session lasting 30 minutes, for a total of 24 sessions. Data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, and paired-samples t-test.
The findings revealed that: (1) the developed creative thread-lacing media were rated by experts at the highest level in terms of overall quality and appropriateness (= 4.78, S.D. = 0.32); and (2) the young children’s mean fine motor ability score after using the media (
= 15.90, S.D. = 0.79) was significantly higher than the pre-intervention score (
= 10.15, S.D. = 1.04), t (19) = 30.23, p < .001. Furthermore, the post-intervention mean scores increased across all three dimensions: hand dexterity, hand muscle strength, and hand–eye coordination.
