This study aimed to evaluate the growth and yield performance of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) under different altitudinal conditions in highland areas. The experiment was conducted in three locations differing in altitude: Phrae Rice Research Center (166 MSL), Nakok Village (552 MSL), and Phu Phayak Highland Agricultural Development Station (1,001 MSL). Results showed that altitude significantly influenced the accumulation of growing degree days (GDD), which varied across sites at 1,670, 1,570, and 1,328 °C, respectively. During early vegetative stages, the small differences in GDD (20–40 °C) did not result in notable growth variation. However, in the reproductive stage, differences in GDD exceeding 100 °C led to reduced flower development and seed set. The lowest-altitude site produced 23–44% lower seed yield compared to the higher locations. These findings indicate that appropriate thermal accumulation is critical for reproductive success in buckwheat. Areas with maximum temperatures below 30 °C are recommended for seed production, whereas warmer areas are more suitable for biomass production as green manure. The results can support decision-making for site selection, planting schedules, and soil management to enhance highland buckwheat production in Thailand.
