Carbon dioxide, Bangkok, ThonburiAbstract
Global warming is a critical issue facing the world today, primarily driven by greenhouse gas emissions. The largest anthropogenic contributor to radiative forcing is carbon dioxide. Therefore, this research aims to examines how season, activity, and location affect atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration in Thonburi, Bangkok and to evaluate the correlation between the concentration and air quality including temperature and humidity. The evaluation of the concentration and the quality was done at location with activity that relate with carbon dioxide emission such as road, factory, market, and village in 3 seasons viz. winter, summer and rainy across three geographically stratified districts in Thonburi of Bang Bon, Thawee Watthana, and Thung Khru using a field portable air quality monitoring device by observational factorial survey. We found that mean carbon dioxide concentrations varied significantly by season (p = 0.0088) and district (p = 0.0390), but not by activity (p = 0.0550). The highest and lowest seasonal means were observed in summer (513.06 ppm) and winter (472.41 ppm), respectively. Among districts, Thawi Watthana exhibited the highest mean (516.72 ppm), followed by Thung Khru (483.25 ppm) and Bang Bon (476.72 ppm), which showed no significant difference. Mean concentrations across activity sites—residential areas, factories, markets, and roads—were 523.96, 485.72, 483.75, and 468.66 ppm, respectively. Additionally, the concentration was negatively correlated with temperature (r = -0.2678). Overall, mean concentrations ranged from 472.41 to 523.96 ppm, which was slightly higher than the outdoor baseline carbon dioxide concentration (300 – 500 ppm). These findings should be applied to urban planning and spatial management in Thonburi by promoting the expansion of green spaces.
