Abstract

Basal stem rot disease is caused by Ganoderma sp. The study on disease resistance against basal stem rot of oil palm was to evaluate basal stem rot disease incidence at the seedling stage of five lines of tenera father palms, 2/496T, 8/1027T, 9/908T 4/1075T and 6/207T, and five crosses, 19, 28, 34, 41 and 47, between dura mother palms and those tenera father palms. The results showed that the visual symptoms of infected seedlings displayed leaf chlorosis, necrosis and eventually the seedlings died. The disease incidence and severity index observed in the five crosses were significantly different. The cross 34 (242/224D X 9/908T) exhibited the lowest disease incidence and disease severity index by 51.07 and 38.50 %, respectively and presented mortality rate by 23.93 %. The five lines of tenera father palms were susceptible to basal stem rot disease. The results from this study is beneficial for selecting oil palm germplasm and improving oil palm resistance to basal stem rot disease.
