Abstract

At present, there is no standard germination testing method for papaya seed included in the Rules of Seed Testing. This study aimed to find the suitable germination testing method for papaya seeds. The germination testing of Plak Mai Lai papaya seed was conducted by using between paper (BP) and sand (S) at 25, 30 and alternated temperature (20-30)°C. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used as the experimental design. The results showed that seeds germinated in sand at (20-30)°C gave the highest germination percentage at 91.00% followed by BP (20-30)°C, sand 30°C, sand 25°C, BP 30°C and BP 25°C at 77.50, 9.50, 2.50, 0.50 and 0.00%, respectively. The sand and between paper (BP) at alternated temperature (20-30)°C methods were chosen for germination testing in Kake Dum and Kake Nuan papaya seeds. The means of two methods were compared by t-test. The results found that, sowing the seeds in sand at 20-30°C gave higher germination percentage than BP at 20-30°C. In conclusion, sand at 20-30°C was the suitable germination testing method for papaya seeds. The first count should be 15 days after sowing and the final count at 22 days after sowing.
