Germination Test of Hoary Basil Seed (Ocimum africanum Lour)

Abstract

Hoary basil is widely used in Thailand because it has high medicinal and nutritional. Therefore, hoary basil seeds are considered for trading in seed industry of Thailand. However, its germination testing method is not available in the Rules of International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). In this experiment, the germination of hoary basil 2 accessions as OC-033 and OC-018 were tested by Top of Paper (TP) method at 20, 30, alternative temperature of 20-30oC and four dormancy breaking methods as 1. Soaking in water for 24 hr, 2. Preheating at 40oC for 7 days, 3. Using 0.2% KNO3 to saturate the paper at the beginning of the test and 4. Prewashing in running water for 1 hr were tested. The result showed that the TP with alternative temperature (20-30oC) gave the highest germination percentage (98.50 and 85.00% in OC-033 and OC-018 respectively) and germination index (14.69 and 13.50 in OC-033 and OC-018 respectively). The dormancy breaking method did not affect germination percentage of hoary basil seeds. The germination of hoary basil seeds could be determined at 15 days after sowing
