Abstract

Biochar is another mechanism that directly addresses the issue of global warming and also offers indirect benefits in terms of promoting plant growth and productivity. However, the effectiveness of biochar varies depending on its source materials, as well as the methods used in combination with chemical and organic fertilizers. This research was conducted to study the effect of using biochar and biochar mixed with vermicompost (premium biochar) as soil amendments on the growth of green oak lettuce. A completely randomized design with 4 replications of 5 treatments, which include: 1) Control (no biochar), 2) 1% biochar by weight of soil, 3) 2% biochar by weight of soil, 4) 1% biochar mixed with vermicompost by weight of soil, and 5) 2% biochar mixed with vermicompost by weight of soil. The experimental results found that the addition of biochar and premium biochar contributed to an increase in plant height, stem diameter, plant fresh weight and plant dry weight. Particularly, premium biochar at the rate of 2% by soil weight (MB2) gave highly significance difference of plant height (15.75 cm), stem diameter (8.65 mm), plant fresh weight (82.33 g), and plant dry weight (4.97 g). While other treatments gave plant height in range of 14.00-14.75 cm, stem diameter 6.53-6.80 mm plant fresh weight 62.95-76.45 g and plant dry weight 4.00-4.50 g. However, other plant growth parameters showed no significant difference among treatments.
