Abstract

The objective of this study was to select regression models of relationship between heart girth (HG) and body weight (BW) of swamp buffaloes for predicting body weight from HG.  The animals used in this study were selected from buffalo farm of Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture at Kampaeng Saen, Kasetsart University, Kampaeng Saen Campus.  A total of 172 animals were 41 male new born to 8 year old and 131 female new born to16 year old. A total of 517 data of heart girth measurement (cm) and body weight (kg) were analyzed the relationship. The result revealed that high correlation coefficient (r) between HG and BW was found in male (0.9506), female (0.9627) and both sex (0.9663). The highest coefficient of determination (R2) derived from quadratic polynomial regression models were found in male (0.9880), from power regression model in female (0.9870) and both sex (0.9790). However, comparison of percent accuracy of predicted and real body weight in power, exponential and quadratic polynomial regression equation were 84.15, 96.23 and 98.81 %, respectively. Finally, quadratic polynomial regression equation (y = 0.0228x2 – 2.7061x + 108.62) was selected to produce girth tape for body weight estimation from heart girth in swamp buffaloes. The girth tape would be useful to estimate body weight in smallholder farm without weighting balance
